Spinal Decompression Therapy
![]() Introduction Oviedo Family Chiropractic is proud to be one of the few offices to offer Spinal Decompression Therapy to our community and patients. Spinal Decompression therapy is designed to help patients who suffer from disc problems including bulging discs, herniated discs, or degenerated discs in the neck and low back. Symptoms include neck, back, arm, wrist, or leg pain, numbness, and even sciatica. This exciting therapy offers a high success rate, especially when combined with corrective chiropractic care and spinal rehabilitation. ![]()

Common Questions & Answers About SDT
What conditions does Spinal Decompression treat?
Spinal Decompression Therapy is designed to help patients who
suffer from disc problems including bulging, herniation, or
degeneration in the neck or low back. Symptoms may include neck
or back pain, arm, leg pain or numbness. This may include
painful sciatica or numbing carpal tunnel like symptoms. Spinal
decompression also benefits individuals with facet syndrome,
where the spinal joints are inflamed and not functioning well.
How does Spinal Decompression work and what will I feel?
Patients lie on the Decompression Table with comfortable pads
either behind their neck or around their waist and chest,
depending on their treatment. The computerized process involves
a series of gentle stretches that separate the vertebrae causing
a negative pressure in the disc. Because of that negative
pressure, disc material that has protruded or herniated can be
pulled back within the normal confines of the disc, and permit
healing to occur. Although these changes are almost
imperceptible after each treatment, over time, the results are
truly remarkable. In addition, the gentle pumping action
utilized by the Decompression Table helps nutrient-rich fluids
flow to the inside of the disc. This allows for additional
healing to occur in the areas of disc degeneration.
How long does it take? The treatment plan will be customized for each patient depending on his or her condition. The average treatment ranges from one to four months with visit times about 15 to 30 minutes in length. Is SDT performed as a complete therapy by itself? Spinal
Decompression therapy provides amazing benefits to patients with
disc problems. It has helped patient’s avoid surgery, spinal
injections, and potentially addictive pain medication. We
realize, however, that it is not a “cure all” and recognize that
a holistic approach is involved for complete healing. Disc
problems often occur over time due to improper position of the
vertebrae (also known as subluxation) which must be corrected
for complete ultimate healing. In order to heal the affected
discs, our office typically recommends a series of decompression
sessions coupled with spinal rehabilitation exercises and
specific chiropractic adjustments. We also offer massage and
nutritional therapy to help enhance the total healing of your
body. Is this different from old "standard traction" or an inversion table? Traction was an early method to release the spine
by pulling it apart with one motion. Decompression therapy is
very different in that it adds progressively more tension until it
arrives in the “treatment zone” where it gently pumps the disc. The
award winning Triton® computer is the key. It controls the
variations in the traction pull allowing for spinal decompression
and eliminating muscle guarding that is typical in conventional
traction devices. Traction might feel good to a patient who doesn’t
have a lot of pain or muscle tightness to begin with, but if there
is any significant tension around the affected area, traction may
actually increase this tension and cause more pain. The
gradual stretching process of the Decompression Therapy will be much
more comfortable for patients with significant tension areas.
Plus the pumping action can promote a process called imbibition
which pulls nutrients into the disc to maximize the health of this
living, vital area of the spine.

for high patient comfort and utilizes less force to produce the
results. The real heart of the decompression is in the
computerized traction pulley system. Our system includes the brand
new computerized pulley head system which is the most sophisticated
and technologically advanced unit in the world. No office - and we
do mean NO OFFICE - has more "state of the art" spinal decompression
systems. In fact, the new 2006 Triton® head is so revolutionary that
it won the 2006 Australian Design Award in the "Medical and
Scientific" category. It is also the system that the
University of Texas recently purchased for the treatment of its
world-class athletes.
